There are two commonly used methods for a Gastric Bypass. One is Roux en Y (RY-GB) and the other one is Mini Gastric Bypass. They are similar methods & both effective. The doctor decides on which method will be used after the consultation.
Gastric Bypass holds the same risks as most other gastric operations. These are mainly bleeding and infections. Additionally, there might be a leak between the stomach and small intestine, which may require a second operation. Of course, it’s very unlikely that these problems will happen. These risks will be at a minimum as long as the operation is performed by an expert surgeon.
This timeline depends on how fast the patient recovers from the operation. Generally, patients stay 3-4 days after the operation. In some cases, the patient might need to stay a little longer, which will be discussed before the operation if that’s the case.
Technically patients between the ages of 18-65 can have this operation. However, age is not the only factor when deciding. The doctor also considers the overall health and weight.
As all surgical operations do, the gastric sleeve also has some risks. Reflux, weight gain, and leakage are among these risks. It’s very unlikely for a patient to experience these if the operation is performed by expert surgeons.
This operation is performed under general anesthesia. Also, the area is numbed with local anesthesia too. Patients do not experience any pain due to the effects of anesthesia. It’s normal to feel slight pain after the anesthesia passes. These can be cured with prescribed medication.
